Bridging Waqf and Science: Bee Pollination Project
How faith-based funding is advancing environmental science and community solutions
What It Is
The Bee Pollination Project is a groundbreaking collaboration between Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), FELDA Chalok Barat, and a dedicated team of academic researchers. This initiative demonstrates how waqf can fund scientific exploration with real-world impact — bridging Islamic philanthropy and sustainable agriculture.
The project explores the pollination roles of stingless bees (kelulut) and the medicinal benefits of honey, bee bread, and propolis—especially within the context of oil palm plantations. By studying these bees in their natural and agricultural environments, researchers aim to develop alternative, natural health solutions while improving biodiversity and crop productivity.
But this is more than a research paper. It is a proof of concept: that waqf can be a strategic engine for scientific excellence — one that transforms university-led innovation into accessible, community-based applications for the betterment of the ummah.
